Protecting the Ocean

Ocean is a huge body of salt water that covers most of Earth’s surface. It’s full of life and plays an essential role in the planet.

When molten rocks inside the Earth cooled, they released water vapor and formed the first ocean. Since then, the ocean has grown and evolved to become the most complex system on the planet.

The ocean’s surface is made up of sand, silt and clay particles that drift down from the upper layers of the water column and are washed out to sea by waves. These particles, known as pelagic sediments, are the main source of sand and gravel on beaches. In some parts of the world, pelagic sediments are even more important, as they provide the material for reef building.

Oceans are continually changing and moving around the globe. As tectonic plates collide, they cause volcanic activity and earthquakes, and can create or destroy oceanic crust. The plates also shape the ocean floor, forming underwater mountain ranges and canyons.

As the ocean moves, it also changes in temperature and salinity (the amount of salt in the water). Warmer waters are less dense than colder ones, so they rise to the surface while cooler waters sink. This process is called thermohaline circulation. As the warmer and saltier waters move around the globe, they bring nutrients up from deeper levels of the ocean, causing eutrophication, where harmful algae blooms block out sunlight to other plants and deplete oxygen in the water.

There are many ways that humans affect the ocean and it’s important to educate yourself so that you can take steps to protect it. The more you know, the more you’ll be able to inspire change and make a difference for ocean conservation.

Ocean is the largest of Earth’s five major biomes and contains almost all of the world’s living things. It is a vital life support system that helps to regulate climate, creates food and shelter for animals and humans, and is a key part of our biodiversity. It is also a source of renewable energy and a crucial carbon sink.

There is a lot that we can do to protect the ocean. Learn about the top ocean defenders and find an organization that is working to save our oceans. There’s likely one in your area that you can donate money to or volunteer with!

Every action you take has a big impact on our oceans. It can be as simple as choosing reusable bags, drinking from a stainless steel water bottle or avoiding plastic straws. You can also buy sustainable seafood and use nontoxic cleaning and personal care products that won’t harm marine life. The more you do to help our oceans, the healthier and happier they will be!
